Political Parties: More Hindering Than Helping

OK, today, I believe I'll start with some updates. More precisely, I think I'll take some time to give my opinion on political parties and the American two party system.

And before we get started, I believe it is necessary to explain that I am not associated with any political party and I refuse to join any of them (unless it's a party that encourages a no party system). I am a liberal, and have no problem being open with that fact, but I believe that political parties defeat the purpose of democracy.

The American version of democracy, as we all know, means we choose between leaders from generally two parties. Great plan, but one problem: The moderates and undecideds are forced to sit by and wait for the liberals, conservatives, Republicans and Democrats to tell us what our choices are. Sure third parties can bring forth their own candidates, but let's be honest here, there is no way the current system is going to let a third party win any election, let alone the presidential. When it comes to talking about moderates, we're talking about a good portion of the population here (if someone could find me some elusive statistics on the subject, you would be subject of many thanks).

The undecideds and moderates are completely ignored by the two major parties. We are not even allowed to vote in the primaries! Considering that the two major parties basically rely on us to tip the balance of power, its not fair that we have literally no say in the primaries. Also, don't even try to argue that if we would get off the fence we'd be able to vote in the primaries. Neutrality is the point of being a moderate. Moderates are not going to associate themselves with a party just to be stereotyped as a left-wing nutcase or a right-wing bible thumper (DISCLAIMER: Not all Christians are bible thumpers, it refers to those who are overly zealous to the point of being stereotyped).

The unfair position of undecideds and moderates is not the main point here. The main point is that political parties are more of a hindrance than anything. Perhaps if our "great" leaders didn't bicker like children we'd be able to get something done about this nation's problems.

Say we have senator #1, #4, #7 and #10. These guys are Republicans. We also have Democratic senators #3, #9, #6 and #2. Senator #1 proposes a bill that is good for the entire nation, no matter what political association. #4, #7 and #10 are all for it, but #3, #9, #6 and #2 are completely against the bill despite the obvious benefits for everyone, democrat, republican, or otherwise. The reasoning behind it has nothing to do with the context of the bill. In fact, all of the senators are quite impressed by it, but yet the democrats are still opposed to it passing. Why? Because the bill was proposed by the Republicans.

The same exact problem would happen if it had been the Democrats had proposed the bill, except it would have been the Republicans that were acting childishly about it. Why do our leaders feel the need to act like children? It disgusts me that people that are supposed to be leading a nation are too busy trying to prove the other side is evil to try to get something done. If we didn't have two parties and elected our senators and congressmen for their ability to lead anyone, not just half the nation, laws would be created much faster as the vast majority of arguments would be entirely productive to business, instead of the childish, counter productive bickering we have today.

The same logic can be applied to the presidential election. If we had a few neutral candidates instead of two options for two different parties, we'd be able to elect a leader that is much closer to what the nation wants as a leader. As it stands right now, I have serious doubts that the Republicans will win the election, I am against Clinton and her idea that video games should be censored (for the record, I am against all forms of censorship), and I have no idea what Obama's policies would be.

To be fair, there are advantages to the two party system. It is a much easier system than a no party system would be, plus corruption is probably much easier to avoid in the current system. However, the point stands that our "great" and "wise" leaders bicker like children when they should be trying to lead a nation is counter production, disgusting and embarrassing.
